Medina Seals Victory with Eagle on Eighteen!

Leading by only one stroke with one hole to play, and standing 230 yards from the flagstick, Daniel Medina pulled a 5-iron and placed his approach shot within 30 feet of the hole. His closest pursuer, Andrew Widmar, managed to squeeze his approach on the right edge of the green as well and the entire New Mexico-West Texas Amateur came down to a putting contest on the last hole of the championship.
Just inside Widmar’s mark, Medina would be the first player to putt and his eagle putt ran true into the center of the hole, crushing any chance of victory for Widmar. Both El Pasoans had a bit of up and down play in their rounds, but both finished with very impressive 67s. Widmar held the lead after 45 holes by one, but a bogey on the par 3, 10th and a birdie by Medina on the lengthy 11th gave Medina the lead he would not relinquish. Both players birdied 14 and 15 to distance themselves from the rest of the field, and Medina made a great par save on 16 after punching out from the trees. However, 54 holes worth of golf came down to the final putting green.
Also in the mix was Chandler Smith-Stetson of Albuquerque, NM, who finished with a round of 69 and a third place finish. The low rounds of the day came from Jake Spencer and Ryan Fioretti who both fired 66s on the final day.
